Capturing the magic of old school Hollywood glamour, Interior Design Masters, Siobhan Murphy teams up with Wayfair and Etta Avenue to transform a once unloved space into a picture perfect dual dressing room and workspace. Filled with energy and colour, the room is the ultimate place to pamper.
Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, shares expert tips on how to achieve Siobhan’s sophisticated aesthetic and maximise existing spaces.
Don't shy away from colour and pattern
A pop of colour can totally transform a room and
Siobhan has cleverly used the combination of pastel pink shades and playful patterns for the extra wow factor in the dressing room. Wallpapering or painting a space is a quick route to ‘New Year, New Me’ in your home. The subtle use of different materials, keeping to the same colour palette, has softened the space and added texture. So rather than shying away from colour, why not embrace it and have some fun?
Aim for dual purpose
Making the most of every space in our home has never been more important, with the rise in creative, freelance industries and home working. Designed with practicality in mind, the dressing room doubles up as a home work space and the multi-functional room is the perfect setting to get creative ideas flowing for the year ahead. Choosing a striking and stylish desk that can work just as well as a dressing table will enhance the overall scheme. A design with built in storage or integrated shelf is ideal for both notepads and pens and mascara and make up brushes.
Mirror, mirror
A large
oversized mirror will help to create the illusion of space, bouncing light around the room and providing the ideal spot to perfect your hair and make up.
Glass and mirrored furniture will have the same effect, adding the extra glam factor. This is a brilliant trick for smaller rooms and can bring a whole new perspective. Siobhan’s space channels a vintage Hollywood style, so she chose striking
geometric frame mirrors from the Etta Avenue collection, with gold detailing to add a touch of drama and opulence.
Mirrored furniture best positioned opposite a window, reflecting the natural light around the room.
Dress up the space
Accessories are key and, as
Siobhan says, a great way to think of them is like the jewellery of the room. They can really elevate the whole scheme, adding warmth and comfort with tactile textures.
Siobhan wanted to capture the magic of a sophisticated, grown up boudoir, as she felt the old space was functional before but lacked sophistication. The finishing touches can make such a difference to the feeling of a room and, in turn, your mood. The mix of luxe velvet, tassel cushions, a
glass table and a
pink sofa bring this look to life perfectly, to start the new year in style.
Comfort is key
The start of the year and the possibilities of the months ahead is the perfect time for reflection, resolutions and to invest in a little extra self-care. A comfortable place to get ready in, work from, or to provide a private retreat to relax in can have such an effect on our day to day wellbeing. Taking some time to refresh smaller elements of a space, if you’re not tackling a whole room makeover, can have a big impact. That might be for example, changing the chair you sit in, the addition of a floor or desk lamp to cast a softer, calmer glow, or a soft flatweave rug that your feet will happily sink into.
